WIĘCEJ O EBOOKU - „The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit”

Set partly in America, which Dickens had visited in 1842, „The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit” includes a searing satire on the United States. The main theme of the novel, according to a preface by Dickens, is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. Raised by his grandfather and namesake, Martin Chuzzlewit is disinherited after revealing his love for his nursemaid, Mary. With no fortune, Martin apprentices himself to the greedy architect Seth Pecksniff and befriends Tom Pinch. Treachery, mayhem, and possibly murder, along with some genuine love and compassion are skillfully intertwined in this book, along with Dickens’ classic wit and brilliantly created characters. His villains are odious, his good guys are delightful, and those that fall in between truly deserve to be called „Characters”. The novel is widely accepted as the last of his picaresque novels and was thought by Dickens himself to be his best novel.
